UHC Announces...

Delays Plans to End Payments for Consultations

In June of this year, UnitedHealthcare (UHC) announced they planned to stop reimbursing for consultation services (99241-99245, 99251-99255).  UHC stated in the bulletin that, after CMS decided to no longer pay for consultants, they began data analysis and trending to better understand the use of consultation services.  They stated their analysis revealed misuse of consultation service codes.

In the just released October bulletin, UHC has now stated that they have decided to delay this policy.  It states that they have done this to give providers more time to adjust to changes in their submission for consultations services.  The bulletin did not give a new implementation date.  For now, you can still get paid for consultation services submitted when document supports them.
