MMBA’s First 2023 In-Person Event is Scheduled for May!

The “Buzz” around town is MMBA’s First In-Person Event is scheduled for May!

Get all the details below!

The East and Northeast Chapters of the Michigan Medical Billers Association have scheduled an exciting in-person ½ day event on May 18th to tackle some of the challenges Michigan billers and offices are facing today entitled: It’s Not My Fault! Or Is It? Be “in the know” for No-Fault Auto and Healthcare Compliance!

First up on the agenda is a local auto attorney who will be sharing the “inside scoop” to educate billers on the no-fault auto insurance process to better get our claims paid. With Michigan weather and Michigan being a no-fault state for drivers, healthcare providers are encountering more no-fault claims with obstacles billers must maneuver in order to get a claim paid. That is what will be discussed in our first of two presentations.

Samantha Orvis, an auto attorney from Garan Lucow Miller PC, will talk about how no-fault reform has changed its rules and fees following Covid 19. The best way for billers to get claims paid faster and with a smoother process is to learn from those on the other side. According to Fox2online, 7% of auto policy holders filed claims just last year alone. That number may seem low, but compared to how many policies it can be quite a bit, especially for those who bill in hospital or specialty office settings.

We are also looking forward to having healthcare lawyer Lori-Ann Rickard from Rickard & Associates PC with us to discuss the important topic of “What to do when your office is out of compliance”. This presentation aims to provide the “Do’s” and the “Don’ts” of compliance in the medical office and what needs to be done if you find out your office is out of compliance. The Office of Inspector General’s plans for 2023 are to conduct further audits (via contractual agreements), special reviews of FEC operations, a review of Commission Directives, as well as respond to hotline complaints and investigate allegations of wrongdoing. In 2022, data vulnerabilities, administrative defects of infrastructure and investments, as well as compliance with the Payment Integrity Information Act were among OIG focuses that were shown to not be compliant. This presentation will help provide the information needed to keep your office safe from those types of situations.

This in-person regional chapter meeting will be the first of three scheduled for this year in three different areas of the state. All Michigan billers, coders, office managers and staff are welcome to attend. Even office practitioners would learn valuable information from these presentations!

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 18th from 8:30am to 12pm. Registration and breakfast begin at 8am. The meeting will be held at Mott Community College, 1401 East Court Street, Flint, MI 48503 in the Regional Tech Building, Room RTC1301. Please register at mmbaonline.org to attend. There is limited seating for this event so please register soon so you do not miss out!

We can’t wait to begin welcoming back our billing community to more in-person events, starting with this day full of informative presentations! -- MMBA’s East Chapter co-chairs Kristina Bowens and Michelle Pierson
